Here I am again, alone with this friend, just like I knew I would be.
Ya know sometimes we all need someone to hold.
But it's not a girl I have here with me, sitting warm by the fire,
but it's someone that's true, and comforting too, just me and My Ol' Guitar
I remember a time I didn't have a dime, and times with money to lend.
There's been times I didn't know what to do
for somethin' to eat or a warm place to sleep, or money to fix my old car,
but it always came through, I could sing out a tune and make a nickel with My Ol' Guitar.
Now the years come and go and I'm getting' older, my fingers are calloused and slow,
but I know that I can still rely on this friend.
Oh I've had it so long, it's never done me wrong, I don't know what the chances are,
but I hope when I die, in the sweet bye and bye, you'll see me with My Ol' Guitar.

"My Ol' Guitar" is one of the first two country songs I ever wrote (1983). About the same time I wrote one called "Uncle Bud's Cigar" (which coulda been a line in "My Ol' Guitar", or vice versa haha) But I don't remember which came first. Up until that time I had only written gospel songs, which had a very folky flavor to them, and believe it or not, my voice didn't sound very country (at least not twangy). I decided it was time to define some kind of a style, which I still have not really been able to do in my eyes, but it's been "country" pretty much since then, with a few exceptions. This was all so long ago I don't even remember what was going on at the time except I had just gotten my first divorce and was living in a 15 foot travel trailer in my Aunt Susie's pasture with no water or electricity -- except an orange extension cord going into her house. It was about 1983. Life was very simple back then.
This particular recording was done in "Cowboy Keith's" front room in Nashville about the time I quit BR549 [That's Cowboy Keith Thompson with Gary]. I was gonna put it on my new project as a hidden track, but wanted to have something "new" for y'all before then. Of course I wish I'd have sung it better!
